March 2019 IPMS Ottawa Theme Model Contest

Each March we have a different theme competition.

We had eight models in the "In Enemy Hands" competition, in which the builder had to present a (documented) example of a specific item which was captured and re-purposed by an opposing force.

MARCH 2020 CONTEST - IN A CANADIAN MUSEUM The contest in March 2020 will be "In a Canadian Museum", and refers to any artefact in the collection of any civil or military museum in Canada. It does not have to be a Canadian object - only that it is displayed or part of the collection of a museum in Canada. Examples would include a training aircraft from the BCATP museum in Brandon or the Ju52/1M at WCAM in Winnipeg; or HMCS Sackville from the Maritime Museum in Halifax or the Nonsuch sailing ship in the Manitoba Museum of Man & Nature; or the 1914 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost, or the Lightning McQueen in the Canadian Automotive Museum in Oshawa.

FIRST PLACE
Bf.109 B by AMG Models 1:48 scale.
The nazis sent the "Condor Legion" to Spain to assist the fascist ant-democratic forces. This example was captured on 11 November 1937 by the Republican forces fighting to free Spain from fascist attacks. The Republicans covered the fascist markings with red stripes. As the Spanish Civil War was ending the aircraft was transferred to the USSR as an intelligence prize and in exchange for the many fighter aircraft provided to the Republicans. Note the unusual cowling and propellor.

SECOND PLACE
Captured Universal Bren Gun Carrier re-purposed by nazi scum as a light anti-tank launcher.

THIRD PLACE
Captured M-13/40 light tank taken from the Italian Army by Australians, then re-captured and left with kangaroo markings. War is strange. Italeri 1:72 scale.
