April 2019 IPMS Ottawa Model Contest

Wow, what a great turnout of IPMS Ottawa members and models. We had 44 people at the meeting and a fantastic 31 models in competition. Thank you to everyone. After the group judging there was a discussion of adding simple features to bring a model to life.

FIRST PLACE
MiG-31M by Hobby Boss in 1:48 scale. Out-of-box build, but with added seatbelts. Paints are largely Vallejo, with some Alclad.  Well done!
The MiG-31M (Микоян МиГ-31) was a late-Soviet era project started in 1984 at the OKB A.I. Mikoyan design bureau which called it Product 5. On 21 December 1985 the first aircraft (#051) was test flown by pilot Boris Orlov and navigator Leonid Popov. Only 7 airframes (six flyable) were built at the Sokol aircraft factory (NGAZ) in 1985. The type never entered full production and was not issued to any operational squadrons.
Weathering on the model was kept rather light as it was never fielded to a combat unit and largely remained at Zhukovsky airfield. The aircraft series shared superficial characteristics with the older MiG-25.

SECOND PLACE
Canadian Forces CS2A Tracker by Kinetic in 1:48 scale.
Under "Operation Snowflake" the Canadian military planned and prepared for using Trackers to carry and drop nuclear ASW weapons. Testing was done in the USA in December 1961 and late 1962. Despite not having permission for this covert nuclear weapons programme, the RCN converted six Trackers to carry NuWeps. The project was abandoned when the government refused to acquire the Mk.101 Lulu nuclear depth bomb for the RCN.
The kit had to be converted from the US version to the Canadian version by shortening the fuselage; shortening and moving the bomb bay; changing the rear of the nacelles; adding ECM packages; and adding a new cockpit.
